Finding the Bikini for Your Body Type at Loehmann’s
Sometimes less is more: the Perfect Bikini
The Bikini was not the first two piece bathing suit to hit the waves, but was considered rather scandalous when invented by French engineer Louis Réard in 1946. Named after the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific, there are as many variants on the original style now then there are body types to wear them!
Often able to be purchased as separates, Bikinis are great if your tops size and bottom size don’t quite match up perfectly! Got a size 8 bottom and a size 4 top? Then a bikini might be your way out of that difficulty.

Bikini Style Tips to Help Your Body Type:
- String Bikini Tops& Bottoms: since the strings are tied to fit, string bikinis are good if your body is not a “regular” size and needs some customization. Got a great tan, just lost some weight or been working out? Try one on.. you might be surprised! Also if you are smaller on top, a string bikini will allow you to show off what you do have. Most string bikini bottoms hit on or below the hips, so a string bikini bottom can help elongate a short torso as well.
Particularly good for Body Types that are worth showing off!
- Tankini: Too active for just strings? Tankinis are based off of a tank top so the style has a longer top that is much more secure. Tankinis come in a range of lengths so the portion of the tummy exposed is up to your level of comfort.
Particularly good for Body Types that are…wanting more coverage on the belly area or have a great bottom that can be shown off.
- Halter Bikini Tops: If you are concerned about falling out of your bikini top, then look for a suit with a halter top.
Particularly good for Body Types that…need to minimize on top.
- Sports Bikinis: Thinking of playing beach volleyball or a run along the shore? Then a Sport bikini might be just what you need. Almost like a more attractive running bra, a sport bikini has thicker shoulder straps and often a t shaped back. They won’t get you the best tans lines, but everything will be very secure and will stay in place!
Particularly good for Body Types that are… Athletic looking or need to minimize on top.
- Underwire and Push Up Bikini Tops: Bikinis are often more than just strips of fabric that cover one up at the beach! Many modern bikinis have as much engineering in them as many of the bras on the market. Like bras, they can be designed to either minimize or accentuate what nature has given you!
Particularly good for Body Types that are… needing more control or a bit of help on top.
- French Cut Bikini Bottoms: A French cut refers to a higher leg cut out above the hip. Since the visual of one’s hips are not interrupted, a French cut can help minimize wide hips. The higher line also makes ones legs look longer.
Particularly good for Body Types that are… feeling too “hippy” , have shorter legs or longer torsos.
- Boy Short Bottoms: Available in a wide range of styles, cuts, and exposure, the boy short is a fun way to cover up and still looks flirty at the beach. The waist band of the boy short can go higher up, to help flatter your mid section. They can also be cut higher up in the back, to show off a well tone bum. A dark color on a boy short will help to visually shrink a larger bottom and keep everything covered.
Particularly good for Body Types that are… trying to minimize tummy or shrink a bottom.
- Skirted Bottoms: With a surge in “vintage” looks on the beach, the skirted bottom is not just for grandma anymore! Look for a straight skirt that really creates a 1950’s feel or go for the cute and sassy ruffled skirt for fun! They are often cut higher on the waist and can hide a multitude of sins since the skirt can hide wider hips and thighs
Particularly good for Body Types that are… wider on the bottom and want full coverage on hips and thighs.
